Chapter 23

They finished their toast and coffee in companionable silence. Caitlin noted with relief that the tension between them had eased.

“So what’s on the agenda for today?” Caitlin asked.

Cole leaned back in his chair and contemplated her question. “I’m going to follow up with Megan to see if she can encourage the beings on the ship to give us their location. Sooner or later, that ship will run out of auxiliary power and become visible. If we’re to protect the ship from Drake, we need to get to it as soon as possible.”

Caitlin nodded. Like Megan, she understood the implications of advanced technology falling into the hands of a civilization that was not ready for it. There was no way she wanted such technology to be discovered by someone like Antoine Drake. He was already a formidable threat. Caitlin didn’t want to think about what could happen if he shored up his arsenal with even more sophisticated weapons.

“What are you going to do about Prescott?” asked Caitlin.

“I think we’ll pay a visit to Winfield Electronics today. I’m hoping Winfield has come to terms with the truth about Prescott, and that he’ll be willing to help us find him.”

“Things don’t look too promising for Hank Winfield,” Caitlin noted. “Did you update Jillian about what happened?”

“I talked to her last night,” said Cole. “She insists Winfield is innocent, but we have to proceed cautiously. We know Prescott’s involved in this up to his neck. We’re just not sure about Winfield.”

“Does Jillian send a lot of clients our way?” asked Caitlin.

Cole glanced at her, a thoughtful look in his eyes. “She’s referred a few over the years. Why?”

“Just curious,” said Caitlin. She glanced down at her coffee cup, recalling her conversation with Sarah. Jillian might not have been able to handle the dangers of Cole’s job, but she was a normal human being, with all the strengths and frailties that entailed.

“So you don’t see her much these days?” she asked.

“I hardly see her at all,” said Cole. “She lives in Los Angeles. There aren’t many reasons for our paths to cross.”

Caitlin rose and poured herself another cup of coffee. She found Cole’s answers reassuring. Perhaps he had intended them to be that way.

“What’s on your schedule for today?” asked Cole.

“I was thinking of having lunch with James and Robert.”

Cole arched an eyebrow. “Oh, yeah?” He had to admit he was curious about how Robert Tyler was coming along with his stealth technology research.

“Yeah. They’ve been having a rough go of it. And I know Robert has been struggling to finalize his research. So I thought I’d spend some time with them and check out how they’re doing.”

Cole studied Caitlin with an amused grin. “Isn’t Tyler a bit young for you?”

Caitlin’s eyes narrowed. “What?”

“Just asking. I hear he thinks you’re hot.”

“Who told you that?”

“I’m sorry, that information is classified.”

“Hey, buster,” replied Caitlin as she picked up a dishcloth from the counter and flicked it at Cole. “May I remind you I have top-level security clearance?”

“Oh, right.
